Everything and Go

Our Habitas

This is by far my favorite stay I’ve ever been to… so far.

This one probably has to do with timing more than any; a time when my heart was so fragile, it needed a heaven-like space to heal it. I was so grateful I found Our Habitas. One look at their website and I knew this company was different than your average.

From my time there.

There is a sepia gaze upon the central dock that overlays onto the potted ferns, contrasting against the prominent aqua water. That with six other shades of blue water. The Lagoon of 7 Colors. I’m in my lightly shaded pergola with fried Yuca & a Mandarin Gin cocktail and feel like a Mayan princess or in some Mexican mafia love story. Yet with myself.  Everyone’s quiet, slowly taking their turns to be baptized by the lagoon, couples kissing and caressing everywhere. I breathe deep.

It’s midday, and I have no plans, nowhere to be, just guided by my inner wizard. There was a hot breeze, and with the most fantastic electro jazzy calming, unheard Radiohead, Latin-infused playlist that helped hug the whole meditative experience.  The playlist. Oh my, the playlist playing softly in the background by the main deck had me. I decided to grab a paddleboard from the pile of boards available to the guests to take throughout the day and float.

By night, after a fabulous dinner that tasted like the world around me, I was feeling wholly nourished.  I walked to the main dock and sat at the end of it with my feet dangling off and not a soul in sight. I sit and watch the faraway lightning show over the lagoon.  Lightning has its historically deep connection to the gods. Nature trying to strike for your attention. This personal moment on the edge of the world and the dock, warm night air on my skin, the strikes seem to revive me from my ignorance. The ignorance that I’ve been carrying tightly to my chest for decades. And maybe just the connection I needed to my higher self.

There are complimentary yoga & meditation classes, evening Mezcal tastings, and everything in between offered. My room is an A-frame that was designed around the natural scenery, with a secluded outdoor shower and simple classic Mexican decor. The decks that meander through the land connect you to your room. I stop and watch the bright waters and the ecosystem swim along underneath me.

Habitas, the name of this hotel, means “ to inhabit” … to inhabit the moment. I could go on about how incredibly thoughtful, deep, intentional, and connected this hotel was, but words have a way of getting in the way of what it really offered.   It has been two years since I took that trip. I still can hear the music and feel the healing that place provided me with. I don’t take it for granted that I was able to experience this place.  I have yet to find a better company to match my vision in life. Connecting you to yourself, the natural world, and its surroundings. With local ingredients, thoughtful offerings, and a curing atmosphere. This hotel was so obviously not designed for profit but for peace. There is no doubt that the minds behind this had humans & the earth at the forefront. For that, this human is beyond grateful. Thank you, Our Habitas Bacalar, Mexico, for the healing.

I still think about that playlist to this day.

I can’t wait to try their other locations, including high on my list, Ras Abrouq Qatar and Caravan AlUla Suadri Arabia.
